The gray card on smartphone will arrive from 2026 (if all is well)

Bruno Retailleau has confirmed it: the gray card will also go to digital format. A measure that is part of The direct extension of the vital e-cardalready accessible since March. But beware, prudence is a mother of security: everything will depend on the success of the test phases.

France Identity: a digital gray card soon in your smartphone

After The prudent but promising success of the vital e-cardthe government continues to open the doors of all-digital for official documents. Next on the list: the gray card. From June 2025, an experimental phase should start in certain departments – which have not been officially announced -, in all discretion.

The principle? Integrate the gray card directly into The France Identity Applicationalready used for Store the national identity card. The displayed ambition is clear: building a unified, secure digital portfolio, and accessible in a few gestures on your smartphone. No more forgotten documents in the glove or lost box between two moves.

On the practical side, it will suffice to present its application during a road check, provided you have the new identity card, in the bank card format, already adopted by nearly 25 million French people. France Identity thus becomes the central base of this transformation, in a progressive movement but resolved towards total dematerialization.

But as the Minister of the Interior recalled, this development is neither an obligation nor a jump in the unknown. Rather an option designed to simplify everyday life – without forgetting those for whom digital remains delicate terrain.

If the first tests are conclusive, the generalization of this gray e-card could occur from 2026. In the meantime, motorists will have to juggle between paper and screen, in a period of French transition: one foot in the future, the other in the prefecture.
