If you follow the news of artificial intelligence a little, you already know that the French state has not been stingy in the field in recent months. But these announcements rather focused on overall massive investments And regulatory bodies. Which is not the case with the recent speech of Minister Élisabeth Borne, within the framework of the media Raw. It has just unveiled an artificial intelligence specifically dedicated to national education.

The CAP is displayed without detour: the AI in question will be offered to teachers in order to support them in their profession. First to save time on the preparation of courses. Then to provide thinner educational indications, as spotted what the student has assimilated, and which has not yet been. In the Minister’s words, AI can become a “lever” of learning.

How far? A first red line is laid: “In the end, the professor must finalize his course”. The tool is used to “brush” work and remains an “auxiliary brain”. In other words: useful to structure, not to decide in place of the teacher.

Better understand the students, without disrespect

The other promise is in a simple idea: to better understand what a student understood, as well as his blockages. Such returns can help the teacher refine his progression, adjust a session, vary the exercises. But the minister says that ambition remains under control. The AI is not intended to replace the student’s work or his reasoning effort.

To the question of knowing whether to train the institution in these new uses, and which has tapped part of the national education for years, the minister therefore responds a great “yes”. Training will be offered to volunteer teachers, and the responsibility of the educational content remains theirs. Again, the tool does not erase neither educational freedom nor professional responsibility.

The usage charter, or the frame before the tool

Before deploying on a large scale, the institution wants to cademize the approach. A charter is announced to supervise the use of AI at school, both educational and administering. And to avoid piloting in room, a consultation is scheduled for the first quarter of 2025, combining teachers, parents, students and unions. The objective is to set shared benchmarks and ethical use.

In the same vein, a framework of use aims to mark out practices. It is accompanied by an effort to raise awareness of the biases and the limits of the AI. The students are concerned, with the announcement of short modules as soon as the 2025 school year is back. A way to bring everyone to use these tools knowingly, students and adults.

A sovereign online from sight

On the means side, the roadmap is based on a call for projects of 20 million euros (France 2030) to develop a sovereign, open and scalable AI. The calendar is also becoming clearer, with availability from the 2026-2027 school year. What will it be used for? To support teachers, from the preparation of courses to the evaluation of the students. The project therefore claims a double utility: saving time upstream, and equipping the appreciation of downstream skills.

The word “sovereign” is obviously not trivial. He says a desire to control data and technological bricks. Here again, the intention joins the requirement of ethics and responsibility already carried by the announced charter and by the future training.

And concretely?

On the daily life of a teacher, the promised AI will act as an assistant with proposal of frames and exercises, variations according to the level, rapid syntheses. It can then point weak signals in copies or activities, where manual analysis is long, without replacing the teacher’s gaze, final arbitrator, therefore. You will understand, here it is a question of gaining efficiency without losing in demand.

The site seems to move forward, around its three main axes. First the framework (charter, consultation), then the tools (call for projects for a sovereign AI from 2026-2027) and finally skills (teacher training, student modules). Each of these axes has a deadline and the promise of a clear use for students, controlled for teachers and box for the institution. It remains to be seen when the whole will be deployed.
