The Switch 2 accepts the iPhone as a webcam for the GameChat, and it’s not a joke
So far, the iPhone was playing rescue webcams for Mac via MacOS Ventura. But The Switch 2 comes to shake up the uses: we can now use it as a camera for GameChat, the function of videoconferencing integrated into the console. Discreet, but indeed real compatibility, which opens the door to surprisingly practical setups.
GameChat on Switch 2: iPhone as a simple and efficient solution
In the shadow of official announcements and certified accessories, a discovery circulates: if you have an iPhone, an HDMI cable to USB-C and a video capture case, you can completely use it as a camera for GameChat on Nintendo Switch 2.. The image is properly displayed, without hack or jailbreak, and the result is more than convincing.
It was Niles Mitchell, on YouTube, who demonstrated it. And the most amazing, it is not as much as it works – after all, The iPhone can already play webcams for Mac– But that Nintendo does not seem to block the option. A rare technical opening in the Japanese manufacturer, usually more quick to lock their interfaces than to make them compatible with the outside world.
Here is the configuration tested in the demonstration video:
- An iPhone (any recent model, as long as it can send an HDMI flow at output via Lightning or USB-C),
- An official Apple Apple adapter Lightning or USB-C to HDMI,
- A standard HDMI cable (any),
- An HDMI capture housing to UVC USB-C compatible, such as the Elgato Cam Link 4K (130 €), or a cheaper equivalent (there are correct models at 25-30 € on Amazon)
The principle is simple: the iPhone sends its image to HDMI, the case converts it, and the Switch 2 recognizes it as if it were a USB-C webcam. Result: your head appears in GameChat as if you used the official camera sold by Nintendo.
