The manufacturing quality of Tesla is often pointed out. At the end of last year, the German Technical Inspection Organization TÜV had thus noted a very important technical control failure rate for the Tesla Model 3, to the point of making it the least well -classified recent car.

23 % failure to technical control after only four years

This time, it is the turn of the Federation of Danish Motorists (FDM) to sound the alarm. Thus, in 2024, the Tesla Model 3 was the electric car with the highest technical control rate in Denmark. 23 % of 4,668 Tesla Model 3 which passed this periodic exam from January 1 to November 21, 2024 were failed, against an average of “only” 9 % for other electric cars.

The FDM notes that the most often noted defects relate to the following defect groups: “braking equipment”, “lighting equipment”, “axles, wheels and tires” and “steering equipment”.

“Electric cars brake differently, and the brake problems are well known. But it is critical that the problems of suspension and steering game are so pronounced on a car as recent as the Tesla Model 3. We do not see this on other cars. It is the same for the overrepresentation of defects in the tesla headlights”details Lone Otto, head of the FDM technical service.

It is therefore not really the mechanical reliability that is involved, but rather various failures that are worth Model 3 many failures with technical control. One of the reasons that can explain this very bad score is the absence of an annual revision in the interview periodicity established by Tesla. Indeed, these faults could have been spotted by the technicians of the manufacturer during a passing through a workshop. Unfortunately, for many Tesla, this technical control may have been their very first inspection by a professional after four years on the road, since some customers forget that a car, even electric, requires regular follow-up.

“Tesla offers a four -year warranty on its cars. This warranty coincides with their first technical control. A good advice is to have your car inspected by an independent professional before reaching the expiration date. In general, we recommend that you regularly maintain your car and have the brakes and the general condition of the vehicle checked. Preferably once a year. This recommendation applies whatever the brand of the car The car. “advises Lone Otto.

The cars tested in 2024 were vintage 2020. “We have no reason to believe that the more recent vintages of the Tesla Model 3 will be very different from the 2020 vintage with regard to breakdowns and therefore failure rates. It will be more interesting to see how the Tesla Model will behave there”indicates Lone Otto. Remember, however, that the 2020 models were mainly assembled in the United States, at the Fremont factory, where the largest enormities of the manufacturer were produced. Since the production of Model 3 in China for the copies delivered in Europe, which has started gradually since the very end of 2019, quality control seems to have improved greatly. Case to follow.
