Update and stop: Windows 11 always does anything with this option

Do you select the Update option and stop on your PC under Windows while going to bed, thinking of finding it off when you wake up? What is not your surprise to find it on the connection screen by extiring yourself from the cozy arms of Morpheus.

Well, know that you are not alone. A Bug spotted in 2023 by our colleagues from Windows Latest still persists in 2025, as we experienced on three editorial computers.

A frustrating and widespread bug

The scenario has become familiar for part of the Windows community … Instead of turning out completely after installing the latest updates, the system restarts and wisely awaits on the connection screen, despite the choice of the Update and Stop option. The user must then intervene a second time to finally extinguish his machine manually.

Update and stop, really?

Observed in particular with the July 2023 updates (KB5028166 for Windows 10 and KB5028185 for Windows 11), this behavior is not an isolated case. Hundreds of testimonies on Microsoft’s comment hub, as well as many discussions on forums such as Reddit, confirm that, without touching everyone, a majority of users are affected by this problem.

On X (ex-Twitter), even hardware Unboxed goes there with his little survey. Thus, according to the 3,817 responses, 66 % of respondents confirm that their PC is restarting instead of stopping.

Possible technical reasons

To understand the origin of the bug, an old developer of Microsoft, which remained anonymous, provided two potential explanations to our colleagues as Windows Latest in 2023.

  • Quick start: designed to speed up Windows start time, this option saves part of the system information in a file during extinction. This process may interfere with the installation of updates, inadvertently causing a restart instead of a stop.

  • The functioning of updates itself: if updates have been pending for a long time or have not been finalized, Windows may need to restart to continue the installation. In this case, the restart control would take precedence over the user’s stop request.

Two years after the appearance of this bug, the Update and Stop option is always present in Windows 11. We wonder why Microsoft does not remove this option, which works once in three, or simply does not correct this feature.
