After YouTube Or Chrome, Google tackles the support of other applications. It is now Waze’s turn to ask for an even more recent version of Android to operate on smartphones. Bad news for users, who will have to turn to other applications for optimal GPS navigation.
Android 10 at least to update Waze, is this really a problem?
With the latest beta version of Waze On Android (version 5.9.90), Google has bad news for its second and famous GPS application: the end of the support on smartphones running Android 9.0.
Several users have indeed noted the appearance of a window pop-up announcing the coming end of updates. It is therefore compulsory to have installed Android 10 to benefit from a full navigation experience.
A situation which is therefore less problematic than expected. Indeed, Google stresses that users cannot install a more recent version of Android will always be able to use Waze – but they will not receive the next application updates, nor new features.
“It also means that in the long term, the application will stop working completely, although it is difficult to say how long it will take”add 9TO5GOOGLE.
Knowing that this end of the medium is announced at the moment to users of the beta Android From Waze, there is a good chance that this applies in the coming weeks via a new version available to the general public.
All this could lead to a transition to other GPS applications, and why not one that does not collect much data. It is otherwise possible to go to Google Mapswhich always supports smartphones under Android 8.0.
For information, 5.8 % of Waze users have a smartphone running Android 9.0 and previous versions. A significant abandonment on the part of the Mountain View firm, which has no choice in the face of the large number of Android versions still supported – to which is added a new version each year.
