“We can no longer depend on Microsoft”: this European country slams the door and chooses Linux

After Germany, it is Denmark’s turn to turn its back on Microsoft. The Danish government is seriously planning to replace Windows and Office 365 by Free alternatives like Linux and LibreOffice. A change in strategic CAP as much as Iideological, which says a lot about increasing concerns linked to digital sovereignty.
Microsoft ejected: Denmark goes to Linux and LibreOffice to regain control
Danish digital minister Caroline Stage Olsen, does not go by four paths: next month, her own ministry will start to do without Microsoft. Exit Office 365, Hello LibreOffice. And this is only the beginning.
This turn, far from being purely technical, is part of a broader logic: to reduce the dependence towards non -European digital giants, starting with Microsoft. Because behind the fear of a technological monopoly hides another, less visible reality: Political instability of the United States. Online in sight, the controversial decisions of the Trump administration, especially those aimed at international institutions – such as the freezing of access to the Microsoft account of the International Criminal Court.
In other words: if even international justice can be cut off from its digital tools overnight, then why would a sovereign state like Denmark continue to bet everything on a single provider?
This is not the first time that a European country has been wondering. In Germany, the province of Schleswig-Holstein has already planned to migrate 30,000 workstations to Linux by 2027. The open source, long perceived as a risky bet, becomes a guarantee of independence today.
Caroline Stage Olsen said it bluntly: “We will never go towards our goal if we do not start somewhere.” The ministry anticipates adjustments, but remains voluntary and pragmatic: the main thing is to start to progress. The transition will be progressive, with a possible reverse if necessary. But the course is given, and the welcome of its teams seems, for the moment, rather enthusiastic.
