We saw the Pura X of Huawei, this folding smartphone in really original format

Huawei now only sells rare smartphones references in Europe, preferring to focus on categories of products less penalized by the ban on it since 2019 to use Google services: tactile tablets, connected watches, True Wireless headphones (including recent Freearc) and even PCs. This does not prevent him from innovating at the other end of the globe: we could see it by ourselves when we were able to try his Mate XT, this “Tri-Fold” terminal (a folding smartphone in three) barely thicker than a classic smartphone capable of turning into a tablet. And with his Pura X, here is the manufacturer who does it again.

Folding smartphones, Huawei knows well. The Chinese brand was one of the first to embark on Fold type formats, with its Mate X series – whose version Mate X6 has also recently passed through our laboratories. It also offers terminals with a valve, even if the last one we had the opportunity to test date a little: it is the P50 Pocket, which however had successors in China (Pocket 2). These terminals are classic, with their screen of around 6.9 inches in the 21: 9 ratio, that is to say a very elongated shape which difficult to reach the top of the screen at the end of the thumb, but authorizes the entry of messages with one hand without difficulty. With the Pura X, change of course.

Discovered in China, where he is likely to remain exclusive throughout his career, the Pura X adopts a very different format. It indeed measures 143.2 x 91.7 x 7.2 mm, that is to say a little more than 9 cm wide, when a P50 Pocket Measures 7.5 cm wide, and a much less height than the majority of smartphones. As you can see, this format influences its display ratio: place at 16:10. An original choice, not to say new, which allows the terminal to remain compact when folded (91.7 x 74.3 x 15.1 mm), but radically changes its uses when open. This PURA X hides a 6.3 -inch screen: it is exactly the diagonal of a 9a pixel, for example, which is much higher (154.7 mm) and less wide (73.3 mm). The experience is therefore different from conventional smartphones (with 20: 9 screens) such as folding smartphones.

A display ratio that changes everything

In fact, even if the smartphone seems very small in hand, it becomes possible to display an extended keyboard, and therefore comfortable for the entry, subject to using both hands … as with most of the major current smartphones. On the other hand, the terminal is much lower than the Flip type valve terminals: by one hand, therefore, it remains possible to reach the top of this 6.3 inch display. In terms of uses, the interest is obvious: you can, in portrait mode, display more comfortably web pages (or even enjoy the multifenient by stacking two areas vertically), and in landscape mode, you can also enjoy a practical multifimentation. And above all, the ratio is perfectly suited to watching videos and games, without black bands on the sides: a real asset for large consumers of multimedia content and players!

For the time being, Huawei is the only one to adopt such an approach, but it is rumored that the first folding iPhone of Apple would also offer a wider display ratio than the average, probably approaching 4: 3 … Suffice to say that this smartphone is perhaps a taste of the future of folding smartphones. We hope, as this format seemed pleasant to us, once in our hands.

The smartphone also has a 3.5 -inch external display displaying 980 x 980 pixels. This one is also original: its format invites to return the Pura X when it is folded (hinge on the left), as if it were a mini-scartphone.

A real premium smartphone

For the rest, the Pura X is a high -end model without compromise. Its two OLED displayers announce a high light and a 120 Hz refreshment rate, there is a high-end Kirin 9020 Kirin 9020 (5g!), A 4720 mAh battery compatible with the load at 66 W (40 W Sans-Fil), without forgetting a triple photo module including a large angle (50 mpx), an ultra-angle (40 mpx) (8 Mpx sensor). The device turns under Harmonyos 5.0, covered with options that it is not possible for us to test.

Count, in China only and from April 9, a starting rate of 7,499 yuan, or around € 940 excluding taxes. It is unlikely that the smartphone one day comes to Europe, even if Huawei does not exclude it definitively to date. However, we can hope that the format of Pura X will make emules.
