WhatsApp begins strongly by explaining that more than 6.8 million scam accounts worldwide have been deleted. It must be said that fraud attempts do not stop, be it false advisers, canvassing or even too beautiful job offers to be true.

WhatsApp will protect you from scams

Meta messaging therefore adds features designed to detect scams in group and individual conversations. These are automated tools that analyze suspect behavior to alert users before they fall into the trap.

For group discussions, WhatsApp will display a notification when a person who is not in your contacts adds you to a new group. The interface will show all the essential information on the group with security advice.

And that’s not all since the application will also indicate if the person who added you is among your contacts and if this is the case with other members of the group.

For WhatsApp, this allows you to quickly assess whether a group is suspect or not before participating. Note that even before accepting the invitation to the group, it will be possible to consult the conversation and the notifications will remain silent.

For individual conversations, WhatsApp is also preparing new alerts which warn in the event of suspicious contact. Scholars often start their conversations on other platforms like Facebook before redirecting their victims to Whatsapp.

The application therefore tests ways to alert users before the start of a discussion with a possible crook. For example, messaging will display an additional context when the conversation starts with a person who is not in contacts.

WhatsApp and Openai collaborate against scams

WhatsApp also collaborated with Openai to dismantle scams that found root in Cambodia. This vast network used scams such as payments for false likes with a pyramidal diagram or immense scams around cryptocurrencies.

“The crooks used Chatgpt to generate the initial message containing a link to a WhatsApp discussion, then quickly redirect the target to Telegram where she received money on Tiktok” explains WhatsApp.

The fraudsters gained the confidence of the victims with real gains before requesting a deposit in cryptocurrency as the next step. Messaging shares its recommendations to avoid these traps:

  • Take the time to analyze if a message looks like something legitimate
  • Question the logic of the request and if the person is pressure to obtain an answer
  • When someone claims to be a loved one, use another means of communication first to check their identity

As a reminder, scammers and other pirates love to use data following previous leaks To target attacks. Consequently, the attackers have all the information about you and can go back to find someone from your family and usurp their identity when making contact. The scams are increasingly sophisticated, so caution is in order.
