While Europe has imposed it, USB-C could disappear from our smartphones

Since the end of 2024,Europe has imposed a universal charger On all the devices in circulation, regardless of the brand. Mouse, readers, computers and obviously smartphones have been forced to develop their models, and, for some, like Apple, to say goodbye to their owner recharge (Lightning). The objective: to avoid 11,000 tonnes of electronic waste each year, according to the European Commission. However, barely installed, it could disappear.

The end of the USB-C, however imposed?
According to Hope Cao, head of system design at Honor,USB-C will disappear from smartphonesshe explained in interview with the media Frandroid. During the European launch of the Magic V5, he spoke of a future where this technology would no longer be on our devices because of the generalization of wireless recharging.
Once the overall wireless load experience can really match, or even exceed, that of the wired load, we think that a complete replacement could become a reality.
According to Honor’s expert, the real obstacle is not technology itself, but use. In other words, wireless and ultra -fast recharge already exists, but what matters is that people find it practical and begin to adopt it. In China, this adoption is favored by the habit taken with electric carswhich are increasingly incorporating these systems.

In any case, Hope Cao and Honor have made this aspect a priority in advance, but it admits that technologies are not yet attractive and effective for users. For the moment, wireless recharge cannot completely replace the cable, especially when a fast and stable power supply is necessary. In addition, it remains less practical energy, generating more losses than the wired load.
A transition that takes place in all manufacturers
On the side of other manufacturers, some are already considering a future without USB-C. Apple, for example, has reduced the number of ports on its MacBook and rumors circulate around an iPhone entirely devoid of connectors.
In 2024, around 31 % of smartphones sold worldwide are equipped with wireless rechargeaccording to an analysis of Electronics for You. This adoption should grow quickly, with forecasts suggesting that almost 50 % of phones could integrate this feature by 2029.
