Windows 11: Microsoft wants all your software to update via Windows Update

Windows application updates have always been a certain source of chaos. Between those offered by applications directly, those provided by the Microsoft Store and those (rare) offered directly by Windows Update, an average user can easily be lost or miss one. It is in this context that Microsoft wants to change things and encourage developers to rely more on Windows Update with what the firm calls Windows Update Orchestraiton Platform.

Windows Update to centralize all updates

Until now, the updated system on board Windows 11 and less takes care above all of the bone patches itself, certain component drivers and in certain cases to manage peripherals. Microsoft would simply like conventional applications to also be able to update through this.

Via its platform Windows Update Orchestraiton Platformto which developers can currently register for a private preview, Microsoft wishes above all to contact professionals and IT parks managers. Business applications are the first aims, without excluding others.

A real plus for IT managers

As with classic Windows Update updates, an application update by this channel has several advantages. We will notably think of the possibility of planning the download and installation of an update according to the activity of the user and its equipment, to clearer notifications directly in Windows 11, or of a easier monitoring of the update history.

Applications in MSIX/APPX format, but also Win32, will be part of this system, which promises to give access to the tools necessary for developers and IT managers to set up a solution adapted to their installer.

Despite recent progress in Microsoft Store or even Windows Update, the most pessimistic may doubt the capacity of Windows 11 to properly manage these new updates. The future will tell us.
