In recent months, Microsoft has made a (belated) effort to improve and unify Windows 11 dark mode by switching forgotten windows from light to dark. In the same vein of “how come this wasn’t already the case?”, the Redmond firm finally offers the possibility of automatically switching between dark and light themes. No, not via a Windows 11 update, that would be too simple.
PowerToys: the ever more essential Windows 11 software
Rather than directly improving Windows 11, Microsoft preferred to update its PowerToys application to version 0.95. For the record, this open source software offers a lot of simple or advanced tools, to be activated or not, which integrate directly with Windows 11 to seriously boost its capabilities. Advanced file and window management, multiple shortcuts, system behavior, etc.: there is necessarily a tool for everyone in this application.

Once activated, it allows you to automatically switch between the two themes in Windows 11 and/or applications. It is possible to choose manual schedules for the switch, or to follow sunrise and sunset times, as is already permitted with night lighting. All you have to do is share your location and a shift can be set up if necessary. Ideal for enjoying the light theme during the day and automatically switching to the dark theme when the light drops, and thus less damage to your eyes.
It’s a shame that Microsoft hasn’t integrated (yet?) this option directly into Windows 25H2, especially since many OS and applications (like Auto Dark Mode) have been offering an equivalent for years.
