In a clear effort to comply with the European ACT digital markets, Microsoft deploys a series of major updates on Windows 10 and Windows 11 in the European Economic Area (EEE). The changes affect both the default browser, integrated web search, applications management, and even the Microsoft Store, which now becomes uninstalble. In other words, the giant of Redmond lets go (a little) the bridle to avoid savory sanctions.

Windows 11: Microsoft forced to open up in Europe – Deleted Store, Optional Edge, new engines from June 2025

European Windows users will soon take advantage of a more open system, with increased freedom to define their default applications, especially in web browsing. From now on, the “Define by default” button applies to many more files and links (such as .SVG, .xml, or FTP and READ protocols), and the user can refuse automatic pin on the taskbar. Even better: browsers can now be defined as PDF viewer.

On the Windows Search side, Microsoft opens the door to other web search providers. Any application that is recorded as a search engine can now offer its results in the Windows search bar. The display is enriched, suppliers can be reclassified in the settings, and all of this is already being deployed in the insider versions before a consumer launch in June.

The most symbolic change? The possibility of uninstalling the Microsoft Store. Yes, you read that right. It can be removed via the Start menu or the settings, without cutting updates of the downloaded apps. Reinstallation remains possible in the event of regret, of course.

You can finally uninstall the Microsoft Store.

Even Microsoft applications are affected. Bing and the Widgets module now open web content in the default browser – and no longer strength in Edge. Edge, on the other hand, will no longer harass you to become a main browser, unless you open it yourself. What if you uninstall it? Other Microsoft applications will no longer try to resuscitate it.

The first changes have already been underway since May 29, others will arrive in early June, and the uninstalling of the Microsoft Store is expected by the end of the year: in 2025, Windows 11 will change deep in Europe, step by step.
