Windows 11: This very mysterious folder appeared on millions of PCs in April

A file baptized Inetpub recently appeared on many Windows 11 machines, in The rest of the April 2025 update. Empty and harmless, it intrigues by its origin. Microsoft has not yet commented anything, but speculation is going well.

On the sidelines of the safety fixes and system adjustments, an unexpected element has slipped to many machines: a file named Inetpub (C: \ Inetpub), normally invisible if certain functions are not activated.

This directory is linked to the Internet Information Services (IIS), an optional Windows functionality to host a local website. Usually, this file only exists if we activate iis via system options. Now here, it appeared on PCs where this function has never been used.

The most amazing? He remained deactivated. The file is there. Empty, discreet, a priori harmless. But indeed present. It can be deleted without any consequences. However, his presence raises a simple question: why?

The most likely track evokes a change in the update installation script, or an involuntary call for a system function. A little awkwardness, not very mean, but revealing the care (or relaxation) put in the packaging of certain updates. This is not the first time that an unexpected element has been invited into Windows. And it will probably not be the last.

In the absence of official communication from Microsoft, the curious speculas, the technicians dig, and the general public, it can simply erase this file or leave it there.
