Windows 11: your eyes will thank this new update (and it’s about time)

The end of 2025 is approaching, but Microsoft is not slowing down on software updates criticized Windows 11. At the very beginning of December, the firm has just published update KB5070311 on Windows Update. Intended for versions 25H2 and 24H2 of its OS, this is normally the last update excluding security patches from 2025.

This is accessible to people who are adventurous and not afraid of potential bugs, who have checked the Receive the latest updates as soon as they are available box. As usual, some of the new features listed below are available immediately after the update, while others are only added gradually.

Windows 11: finally an almost uniform dark theme

The first new feature has been known for several months: the dark theme now applies to almost all Windows 11 windows. If the options and settings for folders/files or the Run window are temporarily still white, this is no longer the case for the windows which are displayed when managing files (deleting, copying, moving, etc.). A long-awaited greater homogeneity which will therefore be good for the eyes, but still needs to be perfected. Especially since a bug causing the file explorer to appear very briefly in white when opened was noted…

Microsoft has also started its work of simplifying the File Explorer context menu. The Share, Copy and Move actions of a small group of users now appear in a single menu to simplify operations.

Users of virtual workspaces like Hyper-V and Windows Sandbox will also appreciate the ability to enable them from Advanced Settings. Same thing for anyone using Windows as a wallpaper: its context menu now suggests moving to the next image and learning more about the current one.

Improvements on all floors

In this rich update, Microsoft also adds the possibility of adding and managing connected smartphones from the Windows settings (Bluetooth and devices section). The new Quick Machine Recovery (QMR) option is now enabled by default to help get a PC out of a situation where it can no longer boot, using a PC scan and a search for a solution in the cloud.

Finally, the changelog mentions a lot of fixes (but not for in-game performance issues discussed since the October update), while on our up-to-date PC, the new start menualthough already put online, is still not there. On the other hand, the Start menu and the search window are finally the same height…
