Video projectors have been improving at a rapid pace in recent years, but two essential elements mean that they still lag behind televisions on the market: brightness and contrast. With the Horizon 20 Max that we have just tested, Xgimi has just made a small revolution. Its ultra-powerful tri-laser module reaches a peak light of 370 cd/m², an absolute record for a video projector passed through our lab – and a first in this category.

To give an idea of this leap forward: this level of brightness rivals that of an entry-level LCD television, and exceeds it by more than 40%. the Hisense C2 Ultra or the Valerion VisionMaster Pro 2yet already very bright. It is also three times more than an ultra short focal length like the Formovie Theater Premium and almost ten times more than some portable mini video projectors like the Xgimi MoGo 4 portable.

The Horizon 20 Max becomes one of the rare video projectors capable of offering a readable image during the day, with curtains open or lights on, without an ALR technical screen. Obviously, this will depend on the type of content and we recommend that you dim the room a minimum to benefit from satisfactory contrasts, but it is still doable.

In our TV lab with very large light spots on the ceiling for example, we can clearly see that the contrasts are affected, but the bright scenes are completely usable, however, it is more complicated in the dark scenes, as you can see below. In a living room with dimmer lights

With a dark scene.

With a bright scene.

4K trilaser on giant screen

To achieve such a level without degrading the colorimetry, Rec. 709, 99.6% of DCI-P3 and 93.3% of Rec. 2020 — numbers that clearly exceed TVs.

The Horizon 20 Max thus opens the way to a new generation of trilaser video projectors capable of more easily replacing a television. Of course the latter retain the advantage in terms of contrast and especially value for money, high-end video projectors like the 20 Max being sold for €3,000 all the same. For the same price, and even a little less today, you can get your hands on an excellent LG G5 or a Samsung S95F in 65 inches.
