Young people do not know anything in computer science because of smartphones, this 83 -year -old expert is formal
“We were only nine members, I was supporting a fairly large charge. I am almost 83 years old, I have other concerns, we age and there is no buyer”explains the founder from his PC under Linux in an interview to Ouest-France.
Young generations abandon computer science
The problem is that the association has never managed to attract young generations. “We have never done a lot of advertising. If people are interested, they come to see us. We must be a certain effort to understand an area”recognizes Xavier Théry.
This is a real paradox since young people no longer know it at all in computer science While more than half dream of a world without internet. “It’s a shame because the digital fracture affects young people much more than you think. They often have a great practical intelligence of screens, but don’t care how IT works”he says.
According to him, the smartphone is responsible. Xavier Théry underlines the habits of new generations. “They do not try to understand the system of their device. Young people abandon the computer for the phone, for many of them. They do not know it in computer science. However, if you do not know how to use Excel, it can be problematic one day at work”he warns.
For Xavier Théry, this situation is an aberration: “Computer science is everywhere today. If you want to be modern, you have to start understanding a little how it works.” The club had the mission of“Opening the minds of people who came to see us, pushing their curiosity to learn further”.
Among the activities proposed by the association, the understanding of components of the computers that Xavier Théry dismantled before the members, but also the explanation of the differences between the Windows and Linux operating systems.
